The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails. William Arthur Ward
I’ve been doing a lot of adjusting lately. Thinking about what comes next. Trying to make sense of things. I find I am more thoughtful about things, more measured, more intentional. Perhaps this is a phase we all go through every few years when an unexpected event in our life happens. Change happens. The best we can do is be open to forging ahead and attacking every day with joy and grace.
Try this…think about where you were last year. What did you think your life would be like today at this same moment? I am guessing that very few of us could say that we are in the very place we thought we would be. Things happen which are outside of our sphere of influence that often have an impact on our little slice of reality.
This is when we decide how we will react. It is a conscious decision. Are we the type of person who has a knee-jerk reaction to events, or are we the type of person who takes the time to step back a pace and examine the situation? How long do we take to come to a decision? All these are things we can, and should, take time to consider during the quiet times after the fog has lifted and the crisis is past. Can we do better with the next event?
I’ve been looking back and evaluating a few things. It has been a good exercise in self-evaluation. Although, as are many people, I am my harshest critic. To have the exercise be meaningful, it is important to be very honest with yourself. You have to take the responsibility for your own actions and reactions.
Now I find I am hopeful about the future, yet I don’t believe I will ever feel as if I have arrived so I better keep checking the wind and adjusting the sails
Happy Sailing
